Ok, so I'm still not done. I have made a little more progress. I think I may have fixed the bottle issue, but it may still stand out too much. Keep in mind that this is an in progress piece. There are several other elements that I still want to add and I may end up moving things around. I also will add shadows and maybe some textures and lighting. I'm kind of figuring it out as I go, it's not how I usually work, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it when I started. I don't know, I may get it done and hate it. I know I am spending way too much time on it, but I don't seem to be able to stop working on it, so it will be sad if I end up not liking it. Whether I end up liking it or not though it's good to do something your not used to sometimes.
School will be out soon and I'll have more time to get some things done, maybe. We've had testing, testing and more testing. I'm also taking Myles to CVI for classes once a week now, which is why I am up way too late tonight working on this. Thanks for visiting and for taking the time to let me know what you think. I am going to take a break on this one tomorrow and work on Illustration Friday's prompt for this week, it's almost Wednesday and I haven't even started yet...
Well it's looking pretty good. You should be pleased. I think the shadows will make a big difference to get the work to sit. The green bottle looks great but if you round off the bottom edges (like the smaller bottle) it will add perspective. The white paper of the butter ? is hard to read at first.
ReplyDeleteThe very pale cheese is quite stark against the background. Have you thought about blurring edges slightly and this will take some starkness and add 3dimensionality to the individual components - you know hard edges in front, soft at the back?
I like the piece very much, especially with the recipe tie-ing it all in - these are just tweaks that I'd suggest and they may not work!
I like the flow and the design. It's making me hungry and I just had my lunch!
see you
Wow, this is really coming along Karen - sorry I don't have much to offer in the way of critique, except maybe making the butter smaller, it just looks a tad croweded with the onion, cheese and tomatoes - but like you said, it's a wip and you're going to play with it anyway. Make sure you do take a break from it, this is one of the few pieces that doesn't have a deadline, so just have fun with it! I'll definitely be making this baby sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all the tests and wait a minute - 8:30, working late???? HA! How's 2:00 AM? Just teasing, I know you have to get up super early - which is something I've been trying to do for years!
Take good care - see ya again soon
Karen, I swear i did think this is a photograph! just when i open it i realize is a drawing!!
ReplyDeletecongratulations.!!!
Thanks Susan and Andrew! Susan, my time setting on blogger is off by several hours apparently, it was actually about 12:45 pm, which is late for me considering Myles gets up around 6:30 am most days. I tried making the butter smaller before posting it and it looked wrong, but when I am done with the other elements we'll see what happens. It is crowded, I'm not sure what to do about that though. I'm hoping that finishing it and adding shadows will help a lot. I probably should have just waited to post this one when I was completely done instead of jumping the gun and showing it as a WIP since I don't really know exactly what I want to do with it. I keep trying to decide whether or not to pick and choose certain elements and leave others out, I don't know, like I said it isn't the way I usually do things and I am a little wishy washy about it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting and super realistic recipe!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! It's amazing work!!! I like it very much!!!

Ohh I like this! I've roughed out an idea for that project too altho I'll probably do it traditionally instead of digitally - my PS software is way out of date. Thanks for stopping by my blog btw :)
ReplyDeleteUnderstood my dear! Don't stress out about it though, put it aside and come back with fresh eyes, that always works for me. My time stamp on blogger was off for awhile too, I think I fixed it in settings where there are 20,000 time zones to choose from - yes 12:45 IS late!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit! I've emailed you about an evil plan I'm hatching! TTFN, xoxoxo
Amazing work!It's going better!
ReplyDeleteFabulous pieces! I do see the thing with the bottles. Is this piece to show off the bottle (like an ad?) if so, you could make the bottles larger and have them not "sitting on the table" like the rest of the ingredients. If the bottles are just part of the composition and the labels don't really matter, maybe try painting them while you look down on them --perspective more from above (but that's a whole lotta more work!). The shadows will definitely tie things together.
ReplyDeleteIt is very beautiful, nonetheless!
Wow, at first this looked like a photo. Wonderfully done!
ReplyDeleteYum, yum, yum! This looks absolutely delicious. We've been dieting, but this will be made this summer, I promise!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is really looking good! The type looks a little small, though. Could you put the ingredients in 2 columns? That may give you more room to make the font size larger. I know what you mean about taking forever - I've been making myself really get my sketch down first so I know where everything is going to go before jumping on the computer - it really helps speed things along. But it's hard not to just jump right in!
ReplyDeleteOk now, this is just one of the many reasons why I won't even consider rendering too much of my work digitally!!! I'm so hopeless at it, I may as well have REALLY been born in the 1800s! Hahaha... So, I'm just going to cheer you on, Karen, and marvel at your beautiful onions! Go, Karen, GOOOOO....!!! (^____*)
ReplyDeleteIt seems like people have made good suggestions. If you're concerned about things being too crowded around the butter, why not spread the onions, tomatoes, etc. to the lower right, with a little overlap with the pie crust? I like seeing WIPs. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the comment on my page too!
ReplyDeleteIt is coming along really nicely, Karen. Everything I would suggest has pretty much already been covered by everyone. I find myself in the same predicament sometimes. I know the end result I envision, but I hit a brick wall trying to get there. Susan's suggestion of just walking away from it for a while and coming back to it can help tremendously. And I second the suggestion Lynn mentioned about an initial sketch. Doing both of those usually do the trick for me. Looking forward to the finished piece! :)
ReplyDeleteKaren, this is coming along very nicely. I think it will look great with more textures and some lighting and shadows. Don't get discouraged. Try and have a vision in your mind of what you want it to look like and work toward making it look like what you see in your imagination. I know that's easier said than done. Don't give up. Every piece you work on helps to make you a better artist, whether or not you're completely happy with it in the end, you'll at least have learned something along the way.
ReplyDeletegreat work, and it's so interesting to observe the evolution of it!!!
ReplyDeletekaren, you're being way way too hard on yourself ... this is going to be great! I agree you need to put some sort of shadows behind each element (it will just help them work with the background better, that's all, less like overlaid cut-and-paste objects that way). I also think the bacon is a bit ... ur ... needs to spend some time in makeup.
ReplyDeleteBut the overall feel that comes through, even at first glance, is sumptuous and yummy and beautifully painted, so even at a glance it's a total success!
Don't forget to enjoy the forest because of a few trees . . .
Looking good.... yummy recipe too!
ReplyDeleteGeeeeeee Karen! This is awesome! I love checking in and seeing the progress..and I can see all of the hard work you've been putting into it. The cheese looks awesome, the bottles are spot-on, everything is looking so smashing. Can't wait to see the finished piece, though I'm enjoying this whole process. All is busy over here, but I just wanted to pop in and say hi! It's a relief to hear that summer will be upon you for some more creative and rest time for you. Take care!
ReplyDeleteThis is looking great Karen! Can't wait to see the next steps!
ReplyDelete-Wilson
This is looking really nice! I have so many incomplete pieces... so I feel your pain. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteCheeseburger pie!!! YUMMMMM, you are my kinda gal! This is already looking fabuloso, molto bene, BAM kicked up a notch. I think it's fantastic that you are doing things differently and stepping out of the comfort zone. Just play, play, play. And in the end, you will probably learn a lot of new things about process and software. When you're done, I'll be waiting at the table with my napkin tucked into my collar, knife and fork at the ready.
