Birthdays!

Well, I hurt my back last week and I haven't been able to do a thing. I mean nothing. My husband was out of town and I had my grandson for a few days, so I had to have my mother in law come and help me out.  I don't like taking medicine any more than is absolutely necessary. I just hate the way it makes me feel, even more muddled than usual. I had to take anti-inflammatories  and muscle relaxers and they relaxed my brain as well as every inch of my body.   I was a total slug,  but I am much better this weekend, so hopefully the worst is over.

August is a big birthday month in our family. A great nieces birthday, then my oldest daughters birthday,  followed by my son's birthday, then my sisters birthday and my friend Clau has a birthday too.  I had so many  things I wanted to do for everyone and I haven't been able to make a single cake or do anything special for anyone.  I just hate having a bad back, it puts such a damper on things! and don't you just hate it when you hurt yourself?!!!

  1. Awwwww... this is a wonderful birthday present! Sorry you've been laid up-- that's really crummy and back pain is so miserable.

This is so sweet, I love everything about it! The dress the balloons, and my younger son still thinks a birthday cake just isn't right without one of those number candles!!

  3. Well when I hurt myself I always look for the edit undo button :) I can never find it. Heh. And when my board hits me in the head I think "Gee this is dangerous.. maybe I should take up knitting." :)

On the image, well this is lovely, all soft and delicate and feel good and happy happy. I like it. :) Those pastel colours really sing! lalalalal (that's the colours singing :) ).

Heh. You know at first I thought she had no eye, then I made the image larger and saw her delicate eyelashes.

hope your back is better soon.

Hurting ourselves just shows we are human and not robots. So I now belive you are not a robot!

  5. Does this mean I won't be seeing any of your delicious looking work? Now, ain't that a bloomin' shame? :((

Well, I hope you feel better soon, Karen. You know what works for me when I hurt my back? A nice hot balsam back rub and lots of ice cream! Err...you 'eat' the ice cream, of course, not rub it on your back... (^_____^)

And this girl? She is just luvvly!! The details are amazing, and those balloons make a great touch to the piece! :)

  7. Oh thank you my sister for those very sweet and encouraging words. I so do appreciate them and take them heart! Looking at your beautiful illustration brought back such wonderful memories for me. I was speaking to some about my 5th birthday. I will never ever forget. My mom went all out. It was held in the basement of our old apartment building and even though we didn't have lot of money she went got me the best tasting cake and ice cream I have ever had in life. We had all the party hats and noise makers and peanuts placed into cute little pastel colored cups and games like ,""pin the Tail on the Donkey" and so much more. I remember the red and white dress I wore and the pretty shiny shoes and all my little friends that came. Your picture brought back all of this and more. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Hugs to as always. YOU ROCK LADY!!!!!

  8. Oh gosh, Karen! I'm SO sorry to hear of your bad back..but so very glad that you're able to post again and that you're feeling a bit better! My brother also has a bad back every now and again, and I can't imagine what it would be like, so DO take good care and ease into things slowly. Wow! Happy Birthday to all! I'm sure they all celebrated well and it was probably a nice thing that you were given a bit of a break, huh? Did everyone pitch in? : ) I would think so...it seems that you give a lot of yourself to your family..so hope that it is reciprocated when you're in a pickle. This is a very sweet illustration, Karen! That is ONE lucky little girl..look at all of the decor, detail and fun all wrapped up in one illustration. One thing I can always say about your work, is that you care a lot about your illustrations..and that detail (all of the little things in a piece) is very important to you. I appreciate all of your hard work! Here's to a restful week for you - and hopefully more pieces to see in the future weeks..take your time, we'll be here! : )

  9. Awww Karen I am so sorry that you are hurting>It seems like it always happens when there is so much to do. I'm so glad you were able to get to your computer and post this wonderful illustration. I love all the details like the cake, wallpaper and her dress. So lovely! Maybe you can stretch it a bit and call the candle a star. She is making a wish upon a star. Or you can delete the satellite from your satellite illo and use it for star gazing. I love that illo with the little boy looking through his telescope on a fluffy cloud. I will keep you in my prayers Karen. I hope and pray that you are "back" to full strength in no time.

  12. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I missed this. I hope you are better now. Not good, not good at all. Are you ambulatory? I hate taking medications too. I am such a non-compliant patient. I hope you are better now. I see you have a new post.

  13. yes, I am ambulatory, kind of, I just walk slightly hunched and very slowwwwwwwly... I nearly severed my sciatic nerve about 12 years ago and this isn't even remotely like that was. But it is still a pain and it always scares me a little because degenerative back disease seems to run in my family. But I am much better, just getting there at a slow pace.
