This is my finished illustration for the prompt Mystic for Monday Artday. I may work on it more later, I'd like to use it for my portfolio. I'll have to see how I feel about it tomorrow. I didn't have to babysit due to snow so I worked it straight through. I may decide something doesn't look right later. But yeah, I finished! Now on to Illustration Friday... Please let me know what you think. I really appreciate your input.
I think it is fantastic! How do you set a scene like this, do you use photos?
ReplyDeleteYes, I use a photo just for the poses, the face of the red head is my best friends daughter from memory the other girls and clothes are made up but the basic set up I sketched from a reference photo, I just use photos for poses. I tried Poser, but I get more natural poses sketching from photos.
ReplyDeleteI love the softness of it!
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, gracious, Karen..this is just WONDERFUL! The amount of detail, contrast, textures, and expressions are super. I think that the best thing I can say about this great piece is that you really nailed the composition, and intrigue. Really, you did! The only, teeny tiny comment I'd have to make is on the "orb" - if you squint, I think that it's not a perfectly round sphere..and I think that if you could shave off a bit of the bottom right side a bit, and really make it perfectly symmetrical, it would kick it up a notch (as Emeril would say). But that's just my opinion...if you purposefully wanted it non-spherical, then I would say push it just to the other side (make it more non-spherical, or have it absolutely a perfect sphere. And keep the floating, hazey orb-like feel..that rocks!). Always great to see your visits Karen. This is a great portfolio piece!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Shirley, I will work on this. I really appreciate it. I am having some vision issues and went from no glasses to bifocal contacts and my vision is still a little off. This is my first piece working with them in. With out them in I can certainly see that you are right. So thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI love the scene, but the cat is my favorite! :)
ReplyDeleteKaren this is gorgeous! I love the composition, the colors and you've captured unique personalities of the girls. I love the details in their clothes and jewelry too. I would agree on the teensy point Shirley made about the crystal ball, but that's it. How do you make that signature wallpaper of yours? Awesome job and definitely a portfolio piece! Also, completely off topic, how did you like "A breath of snow and ashes"?
ReplyDeletevery dynamic! love the girls' expressions!
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful-- Nice how everyone is focused in on what is happening, even the cat!! (TMB's, Karen, Too Many Birthdays! We are nearly the same age, and every day is different, some days my bifocal contacts are best to work in, other days I wear my glasses, and other days I can only paint with nothing and my nose up against the paper!! UGH!)
ReplyDeleteTMB's, wow,I like that! I am definitely having difficulty adjusting to them. I have to go back this week and have the prescription tweaked. I think deciding to go all digital at my age is maybe pushing it a bit too. But I love it so! Thank you all so much for your input and kind words. Oh and I am actually still reading "A Breath of Snow and Ashes", Susan. I have been reading her books for something like 17 years or so and they take her so long to write that I am forcing myself to read it slowly so I can relish it! I really love her writing. I love the historical research she puts into her work, Scotland, the Gaelic, just all of it really. Ahhh, to have that kind of talent. Simply amazing!
ReplyDeleteThis beautiful illo is definitely going to make fantastic portfolio of yours! Love your style!
ReplyDeleteSusan, sorry, I left out the wallpaper thing, I make most of them, they are really simple in photoshop, just a repeating pattern. I'd be happy to give you a tutorial on it if you'd like. Some are from photos, some are from free photoshop patterns that you can get online.
ReplyDeletebeautiful work! i also enjoyed seeing your work in progress!
